1.       Organizational Location

The Communication Assistant is located in the country office in Yangon and reports to the Media and Communication Specialist in Yangon.

2.       Job Purpose

UNFPA’s Fourth Country Programme Document (2018-2022) for Myanmar was approved by the Executive Board in September 2017. The Programme focuses on three key areas of intervention 1) sexual and reproductive health) 2) gender equality and women’s empowerment and 3) population dynamics. The proposed Country Programme is aligned with new UNFPA’s Strategic Plan 2018-2021 and the first United Nations Development Assistance Framework (2018-2021). Youth and adolescents as well as gender equality and related human rights, are mainstreamed throughout the programme.

UNFPA has partnerships with the government departments, UN agencies, INGOs and local NGOs, foundations and research institutions.  UNFPA has a presence in a number of priority states/regions, integrating development, peace building and humanitarian.

Under the overall guidance of the UNFPA Representative and with the direct supervision of the Media and Communication Specialist, Programme Assistant, in close coordination with UNFPA CO in Yangon and sub-offices, the incumbent provides programme, administrative and financial support to the programme and technical team in compliance with UNFPA policies and procedures.

3.       Major Activities/Expected Results

Under the overall guidance of the UNFPA Representative and with direct supervision of the Media and Communication Specialist, the incumbent will be responsible for the day to day implementation of communication related aspects of the UNFPA Country Programme in Myanmar.

  • Hands-on daily management and maintenance of the Country Office website. This includes technical preparation and regular publication of content in English and Myanmar language, as well as management of inquiries.
  • Hands-on management and maintenance of the Country Office social media platforms,including Facebook and Twitter. This includes daily technical preparation and publication of original content, and identification of content to share, in English and Myanmar language, as well as management of comments.
  • Graphic design of communication material, including publications, visibility items, event material and IEC material in English and Myanmar.
  • Photo and video editing.
  • Support procurement of communication products, including working directly with suppliers on quality control.
  • Inventory and distribution management of publications, visibility material and other communication products.
  • Produce monthly digital communication monitoring reports based on web analytics.
  • Technical support, towards the Country Office’s data and base-related needs in the area of monitoring, evaluation and reporting, including database input and maintenance.
  • Responsible for communication-related knowledge management and institutional memory management in the corporate document management system.
  • Ensures accurate branding and visual corporate identity of all communication-related products, in line with corporate standards and guidelines.
  • Support events management, particularly visual aspects, displays and technical equipment.
  • Conduct communication related research, including in the area of digital communication.
  • Assemble briefing materials and support power-point presentation production.
  • Ad-hoc translations.
  • Perform the communication supports in line with UNFPA rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be required by UNFPA.

4.       Work Relations

The Communication Assistant maintains collaborative relationships with all programme and project staff at the CO. Internal contacts include the Deputy Representative, Assistant Representative, the Programme Specialist, the Programme Analyst, the CO’s programme/technical team, and the CO’s administrative management team.

5.       Job Requirements

Education: 

  • Completion of secondary level education required.
  • First level university degree in Computer Science, communication, journalism, information technology, graphic design or a related field is desirable.

Knowledge and Experience: 

  • 5 years previous relevant experience in communication with a focus on digital, technical and visual functions, including website management, corporate management of social media accounts, and graphic design of publications and other communications material.
  • Essential computer, technical and programming skills: Advanced MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Analytics, general DMS and W/CMS, and basic MS Access.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Good writing and communication skills.
  • Previous experience in the UN is an asset.
  • Knowledge of UN policies and procedures, including procurement, is an asset.
  • Photography skills are an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Computer, technical and programming assets (not essential): HTML, CSS, Drupal, Javascript.

Languages:

Fluency in oral and written English and Myanmar is essential. This includes the ability to write clearly, concisely and accurately in both languages.

Functional Skill Set:

  • Website and social media essentials: Ability to work independently and at a high standard in content management systems, Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Database maintenance and input: Advanced MS Excel, basic MS Access.
  • Graphic design and photo/video editing: Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign,Photoshop and Premiere.
  • Other: MS Office and general DMS.
  • Proven understanding of Myanmar font sets and ability to work across font sets.
  • Ability to write social media posts in English and Myanmar is an asset.
  • Internal and external communication and advocacy for results mobilization.
  • Other technical assets (not essential): HTML, CSS, Drupal, Javascript.
