International technical advisory board
The International Technical Advisory Board (ITAB) was formed in January 2013, as part of the 2014 Myanmar Census structure. It is composed of 15 experts from across the globe with knowledge in census taking, statistical activities and in ensuring efficient data use. Some of these experts led censuses and statistical programs in their respective countries, such as Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States, among others.
Their role in the 2014 Myanmar Census is to provide advice and critique on the proposed census processes, they also share their international experiences and ensure that the census follows international guidelines, is credible, and will be widely accepted. The ITAB offers advice to the Government of Myanmar and UNFPA on a range of technical, logistical and administrative issues to support the successful implementation of the census.
Members of the ITAB have stated their strong commitment to supporting Myanmar by providing their experience, and consider themselves privileged to be part of such a historical and transformative process.
Keiko Osaki, Chief of Demographic and Social Statistics Branch, the United Nations Statistics Division in New York, and member of the ITAB, stated: "The census data is at the base of almost all major planning decisions of a country. The Government of Myanmar decided to conduct a population and housing census, after three decades absence. I'm honored and delighted to be able to be a part of this milestone event, which will serve to improve the life of every person in Myanmar."
Duncan Young, Head of the Australian Census of Population and Housing, and member of ITAB: "The population and social statistics that are provided by a census are critical for good governance and effective public administration, and more specifically for the planning of hospitals, schools, roads and public transport. I am impressed with the progress of the preparations and believe that the Department of Population will have the technical capacity to organise a good census."
