After more than three decades, H.E.U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, will open the ceremony to launch the main results of the Myanmar Population and Housing Census 2014, tomorrow, 29th May, at 9am at the Myanmar International Convention Centre II in Nay Pyi Taw. This historic event will be attended by over 1,000 people, including Chief Ministers from all 15 States and Regions, UN Agencies, Donors, members of the International Community, INGOs/NGOs, ethnic and religious leaders, civil society organisations, youth representatives and the private sector.

 

Ms. Lubna Baqui, Deputy Regional Director for UNFPA Asia and Pacific Regional Office will make a statement on behalf of UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, while Mr Vijay Nambiar, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary on Myanmar will also talk about the huge undertaking that has been the Myanmar census.

H.E. U Khin Yi, Minister for Immigration and Population, will present an overview of the main census results. After this H.E. Dr. Sai Mauk Kham, Vice President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, will give the information, which those of you who are reading this provided, back to the people of Myanmar. 

The Union and State Region reports will be presented to Chief Ministers from all 15 States and Regions, Janet E. Jackson, UNFPA Country Representative, Myanmar, will receive the reports on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator, while Mr Andrew Patrick, British Ambassador will receive the reports on behalf of those donors who provided both financial and technical assistance to ensure that Myanmar now has accurate, up to date information which can be used to plan the future development of the country. 

The Ministry of Immigration and Population will host an open question and answer session following the ceremony to answer any questions that people may have about the census data. Watch this space to see whether there are any big surprises following the launch of the main census results.
