NAY PYI TAW, 1 Oct – UNFPA and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement jointly organized the International Day of Older Persons-2011 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar in the morning of 1 October 2011.

Union Minister for Labour and for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Aung Kyi addressed the ceremony and stressed the need to maintain family value of Myanmar culture and tradition, provide necessary assistance for new homes for the aged while maintaining existing ones, to actively take part in Home Care Service for the Aged Plan in cooperation with ASEAN member countries and to contribute widely establishment of the inter-older persons care service.

UNFPA Resident Representative Mr Mohamed S Abdel-Ahad delivered a statement on the growing opportunities and challenges of global ageing.

Cash assistance was presented to the oldest grandpa and grandma of Myanmar. Government recognized homes for the aged from Regions and States and wellwishers donated cash for funding to homes for the aged.
