Today, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, commemorates the second World Statistics Day. This year’s theme is “Better data, better lives”. The theme emphasizes the critical role of high-quality official statistical data in sustainable development.

UNFPA has provided, and is still providing, critical support towards the first census in Myanmar in over 30 years. The 2014 census was an undertaking on a massive scale and of profound significance for Myanmar’s future and for its political and economic transition process.

The main census data was published in May 2015, and it is already being put to use extensively by both the public and private sectors across the country to plan health care, education, emergency response, communications, public transport and much more. All of which contribute to improving the lives of the people of Myanmar.

The 2014 Myanmar Population and Housing Census is helping decision makers develop informed policies for the country and its people. UNFPA supports better data for better lives.
