Myanmar National Commission on Population and Development

YANGON, MYANMAR - The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has recently issued the notification number (48/2011) which stipulates the establishment of Myanmar National Commission on Population and Development.

The National Commission on Population and Development aims to coordinate and oversee the Population and Development related matters, linking with international organizations working in the field of population and development areas, and to implement the population and development tasks to meet the targets set in International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and MDGs. The commission is chaired by H. E. the Union Minister for Immigration and Population, and consisted of selected Deputy Ministers from related ministries, Deputy Attorney General, Director Generals, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar Women Affairs Federation.

The Commission’s roles and responsibilities include development and overseeing the implementation of a population policy; cooperate with the Commission on Population and Development under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, concerned UN agencies, international organizations and non-governmental organizations in undertaking population and development related tasks. In addition, in line with the guidance of the Union Government, the National Population and Development Commission will be responsible for coordination, monitoring, supervision and provision of guidance in undertaking the population census / surveys.

Through its third Programme of Assistance to Myanmar (2012-2015), UNFPA is planning to support the National Population and Development Commission through technical assistance, research and evidence-based policy advice and sharing of experiences in development and implementation of population policies and strategies through south-south and north-south cooperation modalities
