At 10.00am on the 29th May 2015, at the Myanmar International Convention Centre in Nay Pyi Taw, H.E. U Thein Sein, the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, will open the ceremony to launch the main census results. Over 1,000 people will be invited to be part of this historic occasion, including representatives from Parliament, the international community, ethnic and religious leaders and youth. For the first time in over thirty years you will hear about the size and geographical distribution of the population by sex and age, marital status, education, economic characteristics, fertility, mortality, migration and the characteristics of housing units and household amenities. The value of this data cannot be underestimated, particularly at a time when Myanmar is in a transition process to democracy.

The census has been a huge undertaking but the results are well worth the effort. For the first time in three decades, planning and development in Myanmar will be guided by accurate and up to date data which you, the people of Myanmar, have provided. The information can be used to improve social infrastructures such as schools, health facilities and roads in those areas which need them most. Data for your State/Region will also be available to guide development in your communities.

The census knocked on the doors of almost 98% of the population of Myanmar. This is the data that many of you who are reading this will have shared and it is now time to present it back to you in a form that that tells stories and realities of the population, socio-economic and living conditions across Myanmar.
