“As a midwife, I have had the privilege to assist the lives of two important persons at the same time; a mother and her baby. When I see the happiness of a mother looking at her baby after a safe birth, this moment is the greatest joy for me.”

 -       Thet, Midwife, Yangon Region

Thank you Sayarma Thet and all midwives across the world for their unwavering commitment and dedication towards ensuring sexual and reproductive health and rights in our communities.

In Myanmar, there are significant regional disparities with women in conflict-affected areas at the highest risk of maternal death and gender-based violence. Myanmar Demographic Health Survey (2015 – 16) highlights that nationally almost 20% of women experience a form of violence of which 3% experience gender-based violence. Women, girls and young people in conflict-affected states are not utilizing SRHR, GBV, or MHPSS services nor exercising their sexual and reproductive rights. UNFPA Myanmar’s Women and Girls First (WGF) Programme has contributed to the empowerment of the most vulnerable women and girls through pioneering integrated sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender-based violence (GBV) response and prevention services.

Stigma and gender discrimination compound the denial of the rights and choices of women with disabilities. They are up to 10 times more likely to experience gender-based violence. When they experience gender-based violence, they don't know how to access GBV services and information. They need the information which is designed considering their specific needs based on their types of disabilities.

On #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisability and #16DaysofActivism in 2022 , join our community's call to create a peaceful society free of violence against women and girls.
