Mr. Ian White

Former Head of International Census Liaison, ONS United Kingdom, United Kingdom

Mr. White retired from the UK's Office for National Statistics where he had worked for 43 years, having been involved in each decennial census there since 1971. Most recently had prepared the General Report for the 2011 Census in England and Wales. Mr. White has been involved in international census issues for over 15 years through Statistical Office of European Community (Eurostat) and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). He has assisted in the planning and preparation of censuses in Myanmar and Albania.



Mr. White has been a member of several expert groups on census legislation and regulations, including the UNECE’s Census Steering Group, UN Statistical Division’s Expert Group on Population and Housing Censuses and Task Forces of the Statistical Office of the European Community. Through these Working Groups he has been involved in producing a number of publications such as the Conference of European Statistician’s recommendations for the 2020 round of censuses in the ECE region a report on Practices in Population and Housing Censuses in the 2010 round in the UNECE region, and the third revision of the UN’s Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses. He was also a member of Task Force looking at new strategies for ways of more regularly collecting and presenting population and demographic statistics in the post-2020 European Union.
