Prof. Nancy Stiegler

Head of the Statistics and Population Studies Department and the Deputy Dean of the Gender, Equity and Transformation Unit, Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa

Prof. Stiegler is currently the Head of the Statistics and Population Studies Department and the Deputy Dean of the Gender, Equity and Transformation Unit at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. In her position, she teaches demography courses and supervises postgraduate and PhD students mainly in the fields of census and data collections issues, reproductive health and women’s rights. In 2001, Dr. Stiegler was hosted as a guest researcher in gender issues and reproductive health at the Max Plank Institute for Demography in Rostock, Germany 



Prof. Stiegler has served UNFPA as Census Technical Specialist at the headquarters in New York, and as consultant for censuses in Myanmar, Ghana, Sudan and Nigeria as well as Kosovo demographic and socio-economic survey. In South Africa she was responsible for several gender, reproductive health, demographic and socio-economic surveys and was part of the steering committee of the 2011 Census. She also led the Macedonian census in 2002 for the European Commission and the Council of Europe. Dr. Stiegler has worked on numerous evaluation projects including a demographic and country analysis of Afghanistan in 2013 and evaluation of UNRWA programmes in Palestinian territories in 2009. 



Prof. Stiegler, a native of France, holds a PhD in Demography at the University of Western Cape and a Master Degree in Economics and Law at the University of Bordeaux-Montesqieu.
