Mr. Shigeru Kawasaki

President of the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) and Professor of Economic Statistics at Nihon University of Tokyo, Japan.

Mr. Kawasaki is currently Professor at Nihon University of Tokyo, teaching Economic Statistics. Since 2013 he has been the President of the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS), a professional association aiming to promote development and understanding of official statistics. He has distinguished international career having served as a chairperson of the East Asian Statistical Conference and the Population Census Conferences, advisor for the United Nation Statistics Division and having chaired the 32nd session of the United Nation Statistical Commission. 



He was Director General of the Statistics Bureau of Japan from 2007 to 2011. During his term in the office, he successfully managed the planning and execution the 2010 Population Census in which some new features such as internet responses were introduced for the first time in Japan. He served the Statistics Bureau for over thirty years, and during his professional career, he played active roles in various statistical programs ranging from socio-demographic to economic statistics. He also took active roles in international technical cooperation with national statistical offices in developing countries.
