Dr. Werner Haug
Former Regional Director of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, UNFPA and former Deputy Director of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, Switzerland
Dr. Haug has served as the co-chair of the ITAB since its establishment in 2012. He is a demographer specialized in censuses, development of statistical systems and migration research. Dr. Haug served as international observer for the 2014 Myanmar census and led the international observation in 1994 Census in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. He has also coordinated variety of census and statistical development projects in Kyrgyz Republic, Albania, Morocco and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Before retiring in 2013, Dr. Haug served as the Director of UNFPA’s Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Office and as the Director of the Fund’s Technical Division at its Headquarters in New York. Prior to his career with UNFPA, Dr. Haug worked for 15 years for the Swiss Federal Statistical Office as Deputy Director and Head of the Department for Population, Health and Labour Statistics. He managed several cooperation projects on population and development in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He also lectured at the University of Geneva in Switzerland.
Dr. Haug, a native of Switzerland, holds a PhD in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Zürich.
